With it now being the summer holidays, a lot of you might be getting things sorted to go off to college. It is such a fun and exciting time but filled with a variety of emotions. For most, it will be the first time that you have lived away from home. So everything becomes your responsibility. The washing, the cooking, and the cleaning. As well as getting yourself off to your lectures on time! It can all feel a little overwhelming. One of the hardest things about being away from family is when you get ill. There is no mum or dad to bring you snacks and drinks and tuck you in. So taking care of yourself and your health is important when you are a student. Here are some tips to help you be healthy when you are away as a student.

Students aren’t known for being the best of cooks. You still want to make sure that you are getting all of the right vitamins and minerals in your body, though. So a multivitamin supplement is a great idea. Then you know you are getting some of the good stuff, on the days that you can only face making beans on toast. There are other supplements that you could take, depending on your health needs. Fish oil like an Omega-3 supplement is good for girls with menstrual issues. A supplement like Vinpocetine might be useful around exam times. If you take Vinpocetine three times a day, it is meant to improve your memory. It increases the blood flow to the brain, helping you to learn more easily.

 

Drink Plenty of Water

This goes for being healthy at any stage of life. It helps to look after your skin and help you to feel your best. When you are away at college, drinking a lot of water is even more relevant. If you are an alcohol drinker, the chances are that you will be drinking more alcohol that you ever have. So being hydrated is key to taking care of your liver. If you can, drink a glass of water in between alcoholic drinks. It will help with the hangover too!

You will be meeting a lot of new people and have the added stress of coursework and exams. Home life is busier too, as you will have more responsibility than you’ve ever had before. Doing too much all at once can lead you to become stressed out. So it is good to implement some down time and have time to yourself. Perhaps trying some yoga would be a good way to unwind. Then you can tackle your work with a fresh mind. It is important to get as much sleep as you can at night too. It can be tempting to have a nap in the afternoon, especially if you have been out the night before. Try to avoid this, though. Then you will be tired enough to get a good sleep that night.
