Often when we go to the dentist, it’s bad news. We’ve got a tooth that’s decayed, and we need a filling. Or we’ve got gums that have gotten infected and need urgent attention. Our mouths are constant battlegrounds between our beautiful teeth and bacteria. There are some women, though, who seem to have it lucky. When they go to the dentist, they get a full bill of oral health. And they’ve got white, pearly teeth to boot. So what are their secrets? And is there anything we can learn from the experts to get great teeth too?
They Go To The Dentist Regularly
Women with great teeth don’t have great teeth by accident. They’re in a constant cycle of preventive dental work, stopping problems in their tracks. The main way that they do this is by turning up to the dentist every six months or so. But why are regular dental visits for important? Each time you go to the dentist, the dentist will check for plaque and tartar buildup. Plaque is a layer of bacteria that is clear and sticky. If it’s not removed quickly, it can harden into tartar. And that’s when the real problems can start. No matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to get rid of tartar by brushing or flossing. The only way to get rid of it is to have it removed by the dentist.
The dentist will then check your gums. The dentist does this with a tool designed to measure the spaces between your teeth. Women with healthy gums have shallow spaces. But if you’ve got gum problems, these spaces are often deeper. If gum problems aren’t dealt with quickly, they can lead to the loss of teeth and chronic infection. So women with beautiful teeth go to the dentist regularly for two reasons. First, they get their teeth thoroughly cleaned, using the dentist’s unique scaling tools. And second, they get their gums check to see whether they’ve gotten an infection.
Many women don’t have a dental plan right now. But don’t worry, you can find plans here.
They Have An Electric Toothbrush
One of the biggest problems women have when it comes to their teeth is knowing how to brush them correctly. Many women just brush with the head of the toothbrush flush to their teeth. This isn’t the best way to brush. According to dental professionals, we should all be aiming to brush our teeth with the head of the brush at a 45-degree angle. This is allegedly the optimal angle for dislodging bacteria and acid. We should also be brushing our teeth in small circles for maximum effect. Yet many of us just scrub back and forth in long strokes.
Of course, most people aren’t privy to this expert knowledge. So how comes they still have great teeth? It turns out that electric toothbrushes work in a way that mimics the action recommended by experts. Michael Apa, a cosmetic dentist in New York, also say that electric toothbrushes take the guesswork out of brushing one’s teeth. Thanks to their oscillating head, they automatically facilitate the correct brushing action. And many come with timers so that each brushing session is the recommended two minutes.
They Use Interdental Brushes
Until recently, the advice was to floss your teeth every day. But now flossing has been declared ineffective by researchers in the US. It’s a big shake up to the system. Dentists in the US have been recommending we all floss our teeth for decades. Since 1882 in fact, when silk floss was first produced en masse by the Codman and Shurtleff Company. But now that the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans has dropped flossing, it’s all apparently a charade. Over the pond in the UK, dental organizations dropped flossing years ago. But they did so without a song and dance. They moved over to a new system for cleaning between the teeth. But, apparently, they didn’t tell people over in the US. In the US, changing recommendations has to be based on new evidence: evidence that can refute prior practices. And so the advice has stuck around for longer. But now that the truth is out, it has led to cries of conspiracy. Why did they recommend flossing for so long? Were they in league with the floss manufacturers?
But although flossing may now be dead and buried, interdental brushing isn’t. Dentists in the UK made the switch to interdental brushing years ago. They found that the little interdental brushes were far more effective at getting rid of bacteria between teeth than floss. Of course, some women were ahead of the times when it came to flossing. They had also ditched it in favor of little, interdental brushes. And they made a right choice. Studies on interdental brushes, unlike those on floss, show an unambiguous benefit.
They Go To The Orthodontist
Beauty isn’t something we are all born with. It’s something that we can create ourselves. And there’s no clearer example of this than orthodontic work. When it comes to straightening your teeth, you’ve got many options. First off, there’s the fixed brace. These braces are what you saw people wearing when you were at school. They’re the most common type, and they’re glued into your mouth. The braces are then periodically tightened using a small wire.
The next type of brace is the removable brace. Here, wires connect to a plastic plate that slots into the roof of your mouth. The wire then presses against the teeth that your dentist is targeting. But these braces are only designed to make minimal changes to your teeth’s alignment.
The third major option is lingual braces. These braces are placed behind the teeth to hide them from view. But, essentially, they work in the same way as fixed braces. There are plenty of different lingual brace suppliers from which to choose.
They Actively Whiten Their Teeth
Women who have beautiful smiles make a point of whitening their teeth. And when it comes to teeth whitening, you’ve got a couple of options. One option is to go to the dentist and have them whitened in a single session. Dentists use highly concentrated whitening bleach to whiten the teeth. And so a whitening session can last as little as 45 minutes. The costs for going to the dentist to have this done vary between $500 and $1,500.
If that’s outside of your budget, there are plenty of consumer options for you to choose from. One of the top sellers is Pearl Drops Pure Whitening Treatment. This works in a rather simple way. First, brush your teeth. Then rinse and apply the brightening serum that comes with the kit. Leave them for about half a minute. Then after, use the activator and leave for another thirty seconds. Afterward, brush off with the included toothpaste and voila! Brighter teeth. You’ll have to keep doing this on a daily basis if you want your teeth to get noticeably whiter. But you can expect results in as little as a week.
Another top seller is Rapid White Dissolving Tooth Whitening Strips. This works in a different way to the Pearl Drops product. Here you apply small rubbery strips to your teeth. After about five minutes, these strips dissolve. Then all you need to do is rinse and off you go. Because they’re less fuss, Rapid Whites are more expensive. They’re about double the cost of the Pearl Drops system. But that’ still only $70.
They Use Beauty Products To Complement Their Smile
Have you ever watched a toothpaste advert and wished you had those women’s teeth? Well, having something like that might be closer at hand than you think. You see, it’s not just their dental regime that makes their teeth look so white. It’s all the cosmetics that accompany them. Take the recent Colgate advert as an example. Here they used dark lipstick to contrast with the whiteness of teeth. Having a greater contrast between skin tone and teeth creates a whiter-looking smile. According to Elle magazine, there’s a bit of science to all this. According to the magazine, women should use blue-based lipstick formulas over orangy-yellow. That’s because blue is on the opposite end of the color wheel to orange and yellow. And so it naturally contrasts. This helps to cancel out any yellow tones in your teeth. On the contrary, yellow based lipstick doesn’t cancel out the yellowness of teeth, because there is less contrast. If you prefer to go nude on your lips, sheer with a hint of gloss is best.
Finally, women with great teeth have great teeth because they’re consistent. That means that they’re using their whitening kits and toothpaste. They’re brushing at least twice a day. And they are going to the dentist on a regular basis. The evidence says that people who stick to their regime are the people who avoid having significant problems with their teeth. The less work you need doing on your teeth, the more money you’ll have in your bank. And the more fun you can have going out and showing off your pearly whites.
